What we believe

Thank you for your interest in what we believe! Below is a list of just a few things you might find interesting!

Scripture

We believe the Bible comes from God. In the words of Scripture in 2 Timothy 3:16-17,
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” What this means at a practical level is that the Bible is authoritative. We strive to teach and require only what Jesus taught when He was on earth and what His inspired apostles early Christians to believe and practice. Again to use the words of the Bible itself, we seek to “preach the word” and be guided completely by what the Bible teaches (2 Timothy 4:2). For that reason our Bible classes and sermons all revolve around Bible study and how to make proper and practical application of the Scriptures in our daily roles, relationships, and lives.

Jesus

Fundamental to our belief is that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins, that God raised Him from the dead and is our sole means of access to God. A sample of Scriptures that teach these things follows:

  • Matthew 16:15-17 He [Jesus] said to them, “ ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter answered and said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.’ ”
  • John 14:5-6 “Thomas said to Him, ‘Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. Noone comes to the Father except through Me.’ ”

Salvation

Concerning salvation and forgiveness of sins, we believe that people who hear the gospel and believe it then repent of sins, that is turn from, and are baptized into Christ are baptized upon a confession of faith that Jesus is God’s Son after which God will add them to the church Jesus promised to build . (Mark 16:15-16, Acts 2:36-38, Romans 6:1-4, Galatians 3:27, Acts 2:47).

Baptism

We further believe that when we are raised up from being buried with Christ in baptism, a vital change takes place in our relationship with God. He forgives our sins and grants us the gift of His Holy Spirit to indwell us as His sons and daughters. Through His word and Spirit God empowers us as we begin a lifelong process of being transformed into the image of Christ.

  • Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name
of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
    see Acts 22:16)
  • Galatians 4:6 “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’ ”
  • Romans 8:26 “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with (also groanings which cannot be uttered.“
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:13 “For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.”
  • Philippians 2:12 “12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”

Church Organization

We believe that each congregation is led and overseen spiritually by men who meet specific requirement identified in the New Testament. Those men are known as elders (Acts 20:17, 28; 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4). Under the guidance of the elders and in cooperation with them are a group of men known as deacons (1 Timothy 3:8-13) who lead in specific areas of work. Every member is taught to be involved in the church’s great work of spreading the Gospel, sharing God’s love with other people, and seeking to do practical deeds as we have opportunity. We do this because of a desire to imitate Christ and grow in our love for Him, for each other in the church and for all people.

  • Ephesians 4:15-16 “But speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”
  • Galatians 6:9-10 “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

Sunday

We believe that each Sunday the church should assemble and that as part of the worship service we should “break bread” or observe the Lord’s Supper where we remember Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29). Our worship assemblies seek to be encouraging and uplifting. We encourage people to greet each other warmly. Singing is congregational, that is everybody is encouraged to sing as we are “led” by a song-leader. The singing is “a capella” or purely vocal. During the service there will be announcements that concern the congregation, prayers, preaching, and on Sundays an opportunity to contribute financially (visitors are not expected or required to do so).

We believe that if you visit our worship assemblies you will find a friendly, kind, caring, enthusiastic group of people who desire to love and please God in all we say and do and
teach and practice. And we believe you will like the marvelously simple and simply marvelous way worship is done! As a church of Christ, we salute you (Romans 16:16).
